Where it begins…
After graduating with a Bachelors degree in Fashion Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology, I was fortunate to be able to stay home with the kidsos. I became a dance mom. Well yes, but a dance mom with skills! I remember clearly, the day my 10 year old son ask why he couldn’t wear an amazing costume like the girls wear - except for boys. That’s when I started digging around and doing research and realized that there was an untapped world of costuming for boys and young men that needed to be addressed. It broke my heart, seeing how disappointed he was being told to wear his class uniform, which was black tights and his white T shirt, for the upcoming recital. The next day I asked the teacher if I could create something for him that would compliment the girls costumes. And the rest is history… I’ve been creating costumes ever since.
Leap forward a few years, I now work with choreographers, directors, dance teachers, coaches and dancers creating custom costumes from conception, caring for costumes inventory, refurbishing and/or recreating worn out garments. I also work backstage as a dresser, a stitcher, wardrobe fitter, draper, pattern maker, garment construction guru. Best part is, I get to do what I love everyday…
